Having a diversified link profile is now one of the most important considerations when it comes to building an effective linking to any of your sites. Most of this is thanks to the algorithm called Penguin that Google released on October 5th, 2012.
Since then, there have been a series of additional tweaks to the Penguin algorithm that continue to look for any unnatural link patterns on people’s websites. This means your primary concern should now be how to build some of the highest quality white hat backlinks that are as natural and diversified as possible in your linking profile.
Now that search engine optimization experts are discussing the importance of having a natural and diversified link profile, you should really listen to this information. If you fail to follow this advice, understand that you have a good chance of receiving some kind of ranking penalty that can affect your search engine page ranking of your entire website.
Google’s reasoning behind the Penguin update was to make sure that people were not artificially manipulating the search engine page results, by simply doing lots of low quality backlinks that had little or nothing to do with the true quality of the site.
Each successive upgrade and/or additional tweak to Penguin is guaranteeing that Google is becoming even wiser to the ways of black hat and gray hat backlinking tactics. This means that building a natural and diversified link profile will always be your best bet especially if you’re using 100% white hat methods.
So what exactly is a diversified link profile and what should it look like?
This simply means that you have a wide assortment of different kinds of high quality links that are scattered throughout your entire link profile. Let me give you an example. Think of how rain falls. Does all of the rain fall in one small spot or all over? Well the answer is obvious; all over.
How about another example?
Imagine in your mind’s eye, results numbering 0 to 9 with all of your backlinks occurring somewhere in these numbers. Now imagine a majority of these links (like rain) all falling in just one or two areas, like on the numbers one and two. Would this look natural or manipulated? Wouldn’t it make more sense if links appeared all over these numbers instead of all in just a few places if they were occurring naturally?
The numbers in this example represent the Page Rank (PR) of your backlinks from PR0 to PR9. If all your backlinks are diversified, they would be scattered across different rankings because your backlinks will be coming from all over the place; high authority sites, less authority sites, sites with no real authority as well as other locations that have little o no effect on your ranking but really help with a natural looking link profile.
The key to developing a diversified link profile is to make sure that you’re receiving links from all over the place. In fact what Google wants is not for you to have a linking profile that looks diversified, but rather a real link profile that is diversified.
Another concern in order to have a diversified link profile is your link sources. Having unique A & C class IP addresses linking to your site is important.
It is also important to diversify exactly the platforms that you get these links from as you cannot continue to build links from the same platforms over and over, even though you might do so and rank better for short time.
Remember, there are a variety of different platforms you can get links from.
Try to do as many different varieties as you can. For example, instead of just getting all of your links from WordPress sites you can also add article directories, media wikis, guest posting, web directories, different social media platforms, Phpfox, document sharing sites like Scribed, and the list goes on and on.
Remember that there’s no actual limit to the different kinds of platforms you can get links from. What you need to also make sure is that you’re using proper diverse anchor text procedures if you’re looking for long-term rankings. That brings us to the final category, anchor text diversity.
Using a variety of different anchor text will greatly help in diversifying your overall link profile as well. You want to build a variety of different anchor text, by using generic keyword terms and other kinds of relational keywords and even just naked URL’s that are not directly targeted to your main keywords.
Think of it this way; if you were adding a link to your website, would you go to that website and do keyword research? Nope. You would just link back to the site using the best word that came to mind to represent your content that you were creating and supporting by the backlink.
That is what Google is looking for.
