Yahoo Paid Directory Submission Debate: Part 1 - Yahoo Directory Worth It?

The Yahoo Directory is perhaps the best-known and most authoritative human-edited directory in the world, and it's one that SEO companies around the world strive to get their clients to join. It's that important. But the reason that they 'strive to get' rather than just 'getting' is that the cost is considered prohibitive by some people. Three hundred dollars to get a single backlink? Really?

And yet, that one link gets them traffic, because the Yahoo Directory actually gets used be people looking for products and services (unlike many other directories that seem to exist only for backlinking purposes and don't drive much traffic.) Also, the link seems to improve ranking on Yahoo's search engine disproportionately; it helps other automated directories and other search engines properly classify your site; and it's authority is hard to match in terms of the 'juice' the backlink gives you.

The tradeoff, of course, is that you could spend the $299 on other services like a link-building campaign or other activities to improve your position on the SERPs. A few hundred bucks will by you many, many backlinks from several places, depending on the company you work with.

Alternately, you could spend the $299 on Yahoo's PPC program, Yahoo! Search Marketing. Carefully spend, a few hundred dollars will drive some serious traffic to your site -- it certainly won't last a whole year, but as long as it more than pays for itself, it's OK, right? Yahoo! Search Marketing will give you a guaranteed first-place placement for the keywords you choose without having to worry about SEO. Of course, PPC marketing is a huge and complex topic in it's own right, and if you don't know what you're doing, that three hundred bucks will vanish without a trace or a noticeable benefit, so perhaps that's a route best left to the experts...
