Yahoo Paid Directory Submission:
Part 3 - How to Get Listed the First Time

So, you've decided to go ahead and spend your three hundred bucks and get listed in Yahoo's directory. Now all you need to do is get past Yahoo's editors, and that can be difficult. Here are the things you MUST do :

Be Professional. Yahoo's editors require a professional, eye-pleasing design.

Don't Hype. The quickest excuse Yahoo's editors will jump on is any eye-catching self-promotion above the fold -- or, in some cases, anywhere on the page. Don't do it.

Include Contact Information. Every page of your website should have a footer that has your contact information : company name, street address, phone number, and email address. Make sure that it matches the information you turned in with your initial submission request and your website's WHOIS information, or some Yahoo editors won't accept it as legitimate.

Background Pages. If they could be possibly construed as relevant, you have to have links to your Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, Return Policy, Warranty, Guarantee, and Shipping Information linked on your main page. Oh, and you have to have those pages, even if they're all on one page and simply anchored out. Also, a copyright with the current year should appear in your site's footers as well.

Full Loading. Any broken page elements like images that won't load or links that go nowhere will mean instant denial from Yahoo.

Proper Categorization. It doesn't matter how much free, useful information your site provides -- if it sells anything at all, it'd better be in the Business and Economy category, period.

Now, there are other tips that have been listed elsewhere to get yourself listed -- everything from getting a Better Business Bureau stamp of approval to finding an excuse to link your site to a Regional section rather than the broad section -- but this is a list of absolute must-dos. If you fail to do any of these, you will not get listed, and your $299 will be a complete waste. When you're talking about something as valuable as a Yahoo Directory listing, you're far better off doing your due diligence up front and getting it right the first time.
